Articles are words that define a noun as specific or unspecific. English has two types of articles: Indefinite Articles (A, An) and the Definite Article (The).

1. Indefinite Articles: A and An

Indefinite articles are used with singular, countable nouns when the specific identity of the noun is not known to the listener or reader.

Rules

Use A before words starting with a consonant sound:

A book

A car

Use An before words starting with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u):

An apple

An elephant

Exceptions & Special Cases

Sound over Spelling: 

The choice between a and an depends on the sound, not the actual starting letter.

Consonant starting with a vowel sound: Use an with silent 'h'.

An hour ('h' is silent, sounds like 'our')

An honest person

Vowels starting with a consonant sound: Use a when vowels sound like 'Y' or 'W'.

A university (sounds like 'yoo-ni-ver-si-ty')

A European country (sounds like 'yoo-ro-pe-an')

Abbreviations: 

Base the article on the pronunciation of the first letter.

An MP (sounds like 'em-pee')

An MBA student

2. Definite Article: The

The article The is used before singular or plural, countable or uncountable nouns when the specific identity of the noun is already known to the reader or listener.

Rules

Mentioning something for the second time:

I bought a book yesterday. The book is very interesting.

Unique entities (only one exists):

The sun, the moon, the earth, the sky.

Superlatives and Ordinal Numbers:

She is the highest scorer in the class.

Specific Geographical Features:

Oceans and Seas:

 The Pacific Ocean, the Arabian Sea.

Rivers: The Ganges, the Nile.

Mountain Ranges (Plural):

 The Himalayas, the Alps.

Island Groups: 

The West Indies, the Lakshadweep Islands.

Names with "Republic", "Kingdom", or Plural Names:

The United States of America, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands.

Holy Books, Newspapers, and Well-Known Monuments:

The Bhagavad Gita, the Bible.

The Times of India.

Exceptions & Special Cases

Adjectives used as Nouns: 

The is used to represent an entire group of people.

The rich should help the poor.

The elderly need proper healthcare.

Nationalities:

The French, the Japanese (referring to the people as a whole).

3. Omission of Articles (Zero Article)

There are specific instances where no article should be used.

Rules & Exceptions

Proper Nouns: 

Names of people, single cities, countries, or individual mountains/islands.

Incorrect: The India, A John.

Correct: India, John, Mount Everest.

Uncountable and Abstract Nouns (in a general sense):

Gold is a precious metal (general).

Exception: The gold in this ring is pure (specific).
