What is Realism?

Realism was a major literary and artistic movement of the 19th century that emerged as a reaction against Romanticism. Instead of depicting idealized heroes, magic, or exaggerated emotions, Realism focuses on representing everyday life, ordinary people, and social conditions as they truly are.

Key Features of Realism:

Ordinary Characters: Stories center on middle- or working-class individuals facing plausible, everyday struggles.

Psychological Depth: Characters are presented with realistic flaws, moral dilemmas, and inner conflicts.

Authentic Setting: Authors describe real-world social environments, economic conditions, and natural human dialogue.

Cause and Effect: Events unfold logically based on character decisions and real-world consequences, rather than coincidences or miraculous interventions.

Tolstoy’s Realism: "How Much Land Does a Man Need?"

Leo Tolstoy is widely regarded as one of the greatest masters of literary Realism. His 1886 short story, "How Much Land Does a Man Need?", serves as a classic example of realistic fiction.

Story Summary:

The story revolves around Pahom, a hardworking peasant who believes that all his problems would be solved if he only owned enough land. As Pahom buys more land, his wealth grows, but so does his greed and dissatisfaction.

Eventually, Pahom learns of a distant tribe called the Bashkirs, who offer an extraordinary deal: for 1,000 rubles, Pahom can own as much land as he can walk around in a single day, provided he returns to his starting point before sunset. Driven by greed, Pahom walks far beyond a reasonable distance to claim a massive tract of land. Realizing the sun is setting, he sprints back in desperation. He manages to reach the starting line just in time, but collapses and dies from extreme exhaustion. In the end, his servant buries him in a simple grave—just six feet long.

How it Demonstrates Realism:

Plausible Human Behavior: Pahom is not a monster; he is a realistic depiction of an average person whose ambition gradually turns into fatal greed.

Natural Consequences: Tolstoy avoids a fairy-tale ending. Pahom’s physical collapse is the direct, logical result of overexertion, showing how realistic physical limits apply to human choices.

Socio-Economic Insight: The narrative reflects the true agrarian climate of late 19th-century Russia, illustrating how rural land distribution affected common people.

Moral Realism: The ending delivers a grounded truth about mortality—no matter how much material wealth a person gathers, everyone ultimately needs only enough land for a grave .
