  Self awareness is understanding yourself - how you think , feel , and behave. It's like having a mirror in mind that lets you see what ' s going on inside you . 

Self-awareness is the conscious ability to recognize and evaluate your own thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and values, as well as understand how your actions affect the people around you. It involves looking inward with objectivity to recognize your personal strengths, weaknesses, triggers, and motivations.

Psychologists generally divide self-awareness into two components:

Example of Self-Awareness

Consider Alex, who receives critical feedback from a manager during a performance review about a project that fell behind schedule.

Low Self-Awareness: 

Alex instantly feels defensive, assumes the manager is being unfair, and snaps, "It wasn't my fault; the client took too long to reply!" Alex spends the rest of the day complaining to colleagues, unaware that this reaction stems from feeling insecure about failure, and misses how this behavior signals an inability to take accountability.

High Self-Awareness:

 Alex feels that same immediate surge of anger and embarrassment. However, Alex pauses to notice those emotional reactions ("I'm feeling defensive because my pride is hurt"). Recognizing that reacting immediately will hurt team relationships, Alex takes a breath and says, "Thank you for the feedback. Let me review the timeline and see where I could have managed communication better." Later, Alex reflects privately on how to improve time management for future projects.

In this scenario, self-awareness allowed Alex to identify an emotional trigger, control the immediate urge to react impulsively, and choose a constructive response instead.
